The Role

We are working with a specialist production tooling and automation business seeking a Control Systems Engineer to support the design, development, and commissioning of bespoke automated machinery.

This role sits within the company’s automation arm, delivering PLC-controlled systems for production tooling, fixtures, and special-purpose machinery used in manufacturing environments.

You will be involved across the full project lifecycle — from initial concept and design through to build, testing, and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLC-based control systems for automated production tooling and machinery
  • Develop and modify PLC and HMI software to meet project specifications
  • Work closely with mechanical design, tooling, and manufacturing teams
  • Support system integration, FAT and SAT, and on-site commissioning
  • Fault-find, debug, and optimise automation systems during build and installation
  • Produce technical documentation including I/O lists, control philosophies, and manuals
  • Ensure compliance with electrical and machinery safety standards

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Control Systems Engineer / PLC Engineer / Automation Engineer
  • Strong PLC programming experience (e.g. Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley / Rockwell, Mitsubishi, or similar)
  • Experience working with automated machinery, production tooling, or special-purpose machinery
  • Good understanding of:
    • Sensors, actuators, motors, and drives
    • Industrial communications (Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus)
    • Electrical fault-finding and debugging
  • Ability to work across design, build, and commissioning phases

Desirable Experience

  • HMI development (WinCC, FactoryTalk, etc.)
  • Robotics integration (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, etc.)
  • Safety PLCs and machine safety systems (Pilz, Siemens Safety, GuardLogix)
  • Background in automotive, aerospace, FMCG, or high-volume manufacturing
  • Experience within a machine builder, tooling manufacturer, or systems integrator
